"I think, as far as an author who's
going to really knock our socks off,
it's going to be Nathan Englander,"
she says. "He's a young writer. His
short-story book, called For the Relief
of Unbearable Urges, is a masterpiece.
And I just can't wait to be in the same
room with him.
"Other than that," Kushner con-
tinues, "the standards that people love
— I mean, the fact that Carl Reiner is
coming and the fact that Alan
Dershowitz is coming — I mean,
these are names that bring people in."
Those marquee names normally
command thousands of dollars, but
all authors at the Jewish Book Fair
speak without pay. The fair and its
speakers attract readers from all over,
including Canada and other
Midwestern states, and visitors return
year after year, says Gotlib.
Other highlights this year include
the fourth Local Authors Fair and, for
younger participants at the free event,
presentations and talks by authors of
children's literature.
Something profound happens at
each Book Fair, aside from the famed
authors and huge attendance num-
bers, Kushner asserts. Every year,
Detroit-area Jews learn something
from their togetherness. It is an
affirming experience, she says, to
gather under the expansive roof of the
JCC and to learn from Jewish authors
together.
"Last year, we had a wonderful
book called Turbulent Souls about a
gentleman who found out he was
Jewish late in life," says Kushner.
"This year we have another one called
After Long Silence, about a (Jewish)
woman who was raised Catholic.
There are always those kinds of stories
about people finding themselves. And,
hopefully, the Jewish community
comes in and re-finds themselves and
re-establishes itself here." fl
