Home and E-,,.k „ Service Guide to do with Mount Pleasant Subdivision, a neighborhood of sum- mer cottages built by members of Workmen's Circle our of Chicago. They enjoyed a rustic, shtetl lifestyle with home entertainment. In 1924, a farm was purchased for Kamp Kinderland, which housed approxi- mately 150 children. Together, the camp and a resort for visiting parents were known as the Colony. Kraus says descendants of the original owners in Mount Pleasant "rue the day" they sold their cottages because the real estate prices have more than tripled since a 1990s revival of South Haven. Kraus said Bundy's Bakery and the Golden Brown are the two main bak- eries in South Haven, and to this day the remaining Mt. Pleasant people will only buy their chala from Bundy's. To feel the ambience of the Jewish resorts, Kraus recommends a summer- time visit to the Sea Wolf restaurant on the Blue Star Highway in South Haven. Jim Wolf, a grandson of Max and Lena Weinstein, owners of Weinstein's Modern Resort, and wife Sue have maintained the original dining room dating back more than 75 years. A small Jewish community remains in South Haven, including a B'nai B'rith women's group. Kraus was commis- sioned to write her book by the history committee of First Hebrew Congregation in South Haven in cele- bration of the 70th anniversary of its founding. Visiting Rabbi-Cantor Kenny Hollander conducts Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur services each year at the building on Broadway and Church streets, officially concluding the worship season. In the summer, Kraus says, ser- vices take place only when someone comes to town who can lead them. Calls then- are made to Jewish residents to put together a minyan. One note for those who fondly remember South Haven — Kraus con- fides that the still-popular Sherman's Dairy, known for its fabulous banana- split concoction called the "pig's trough," is not mentioned in her book for one reason: "Despite the sound of the name, the owners of Sherman's have never been Jewish." Any wonder they had a pig's trough? ❑ Bea Kraus speaks at Jewish Book Fair 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8,_ at the Jimmy Prentis Morris Building of the Jewish Community Center in Oak Park, co-sponsored by the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan.
