Sister Naomi is 2 years old. Grandparents Samuel and Dorothy Essick, formerly of Southfield, now live in Los Angeles. Grandparents Rosie and Leopold Sommerfeld live in Gothenberg. Bar/Bat Mitzvah Sara Michelle Abrin will celebrate her bat mitzvah at Adat Shalom Synagogue on Saturday, Oct. 23. She is the daughter of Ilene and Marty Abrin and sister of Joey and Rebecca. Kvelling are her grandparents Allan and Mary Silverman of Southfield and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Gertrude Abrin of Oak Park. Sara is also the granddaughter of the late Joseph M. Abrin. Rabbis Herbert Yoskowitz and Daniel Nevins and Cantors Larry Veider and Howard Glantz will officiate. In addition to Sara's parents, grandparents and siblings, partici- pating in the services will be Drs. Bruce and Karen Silverman, Erica Silverman, Gail Klein, Dr. Mark and Cheryl Silverman, Dr. Jeffrey and Laurie Leflein, Jacob and Elana Leflein, as well as cousins Jerry, Jenna and Allison Silverman of Boston. Sara's new cousin, Samantha Silverman, will share the simcha by receiving her Hebrew name. Sara is an honor student at Norup Middle School in Oak Park. She plays the cello and is involved in the Beth Achim Religious School youth program at Adat Shalom. Her mitz- vah project involved helping set up the Wednesday bingo for senior citi- zens. Alexander Matthew Altman will be called to the Torah as a bar mitzvah on Friday, Oct. 22, at Temple Israel. He is the son of Cheryl and Jim Altman and brother of Eric. Excited grandmother is Ruth Finkel. He is also the grandson of the late Sam Finkel and the late Zora and Morris Altman. As part of his mitzvot projects, he regularly visited a rabbi in a nursing home who taught him about inner strength and devotion to religion. An honor roll student at Orchard Lake Middle School in West Bloomfield, Alex is a goalie for a travel soccer team, collects basket- ball cards and enjoys all sports, espe- cially golf and ping-pong. Devon Alexis Chaiken will be called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah at Havdala services on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Temple Israel. She is the daughter of Julie and Dennis Chaiken and sister of Dana, Derek and Shannon. Excited grandparents are Edith and Harry Katz and Dorothy Chaiken. Devon is also the grand- child of the late Irving Chaiken. An honor student at Orchard Lake Middle School in West Bloomfield, where she is involved in conflict mediation, Devon's mitzvah projects included volunteering at Yad Ezra and assisting in the Temple Israel Sunday school. She is a competitive dancer and avid soccer player, who enjoys spending summers at Camp Tamarack.
