Some Republican leaders wish colum-
nist-presidential candidate Pat
Buchanan would hurry up and official-
ly defect to Ross Perot's Reform Party.
But others worry that public criti-
cism of. Buchanan for his strange
views on World War II and his harsh
warnings about the influence of Jews
in politics could alienate the conser-
vative and religious right voters who
comprise Buchanan's political base,
hurting the GOP's chances in 2000.
This week, the National Jewish
Democratic Council (NJDC), a par-
tisan group, escalated its war against
Buchanan and the GOP leaders who
refuse to condemn him.
The group sent a "questionnaire"
to both Democratic and Republican
candidates in selected congressional
races asking them to "make clear
where they stand" on Buchanan's
continued membership in the GOP.
"Americans — and particularly
American Jews — have a right to
know where their political candi-
dates stand on having Pat Buchanan,
a Jew-obsessed xenophobe, as an
active member of one of our coun-
try's two major political parties,"
said Ira Forman, the group's execu-
tive director.
Forman wants candidates to speak
out against Buchanan before next
week's expected announcement of a
switch to the Reform party.
Political analysts say the NJDC
survey is an obvious partisan gim-
mick — but one that effectively
highlights a tactic Jewish Democrats
will use in next year's elections:
reminding Jewish voters of the fran-
tic efforts by some Republican lead-
ers to keep Buchanan under the
Republican tent.
GOP presidential frontrunner
George W. Bush, the governor of
Texas, refused to repudiate
Buchanan despite the pleas of a big
delegation of Jewish leaders last
month; Republican National
Committee chair Jim Nicholson has
worked hard in recent-weeks to keep
Buchanan and his loyal followers
from bolting.
