Academy Courses

A part of Temple Israel's academy
course offerings will be a three-lecture
series presented by Michigan State
University professors.
The first is 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 27, on the topic
"America and the Holocaust: History
and Memory," presented by Kenneth
Waltzer, professor of history, James
Madison College.
Professor Michael Rubner will pre-
sent "The Barak Government and the
Middle East Peace Process" 5:30-7:30
p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3. Rubner is
professor of international relations,
James Madison College.
Professor Joyce Ladenson and
Professor Steven Weiland will present
"American Jewish Lives in Literature
and Autobiography" 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 10. Ladenson is
professor of American thought and
language and Weiland is professor of
higher education.
A $25 charge will cover each lec-
ture and a catered dinner at Temple
Israel. Registration is open to the
community.

Elects New Board

Congregation Beth Shalom United
Synagogue Youth installed its 1999-
2000 executive board recently.
Serving a second year as president is
Alayna Bialick. Also serving a second
year as executive vice president is
Ellie Levine. The other vice presi-
dents are Eric Rosenblum, reli-
gious/education; Chavie Wexelberg-
Clouser, social action/tikkun olam;
Miriam Schloss, social; Ruthie
Varkovitzky, communications; and
Eve Posen, treasurer.
Events in October include an
oneg Shabbat at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct.
22, at the home of Ellie Levine. On
Saturday, Oct. 30, USY will partici-
pate in Youth Shabbat and lead ser-
vices, followed by a luncheon. There
is no fee for either event. That
evening, from 8:30-10:30 p.m., the
USYers will go bowling at Langan's
in Farmington Hills; refreshments
will be served and there is a charge.
