sions in Detroit several weeks before
departure. The not-for-profit trip
will cost approximately $2,000 per
person. It is cross-stream and open
to all ages, with no knowledge of
Hebrew or Tanach required. "All
that's required is an inquisitive
mind," says Rabbi Weil.
Once in Israel, the group will join
forces with Rabbi Barnea Selavan,
one of Israel's most-popular tour
guides. Selavan, 41, has been leading
tour groups around the Holy Land
for the 17 years since his aliya from
California in 1982. He is a third-
generation teacher and rabbi, and
author of A Tzaddik's Guide to
Jerusalem's Old City.
Dr. Bruce Sherizen, a Young Israel
of Oak Park member, used Selavan as
his guide on a previous trip to Israel
with his wife, Esther, and considers
him to be "top notch."
Dr. Sherizen has been to Israel
eight times, but says this trip will be
especially meaningful. "This will bring
Tanach and Israel alive," he says. "It
sounds as exciting as any trip I can
think of."
Adele Gittleman of Young Israel of
Oak Park visits Israel every year to see
her son and his family, now living in
Jerusalem. "As soon as I heard Rabbi
Weil was planning (the trip), I knew I
wanted to go," she says. "I know he'll
make it very interesting."
For Barry and Andrea Eisenberg of
Young Israel of Southfield, the main
attraction of the trip is that Rabbi
Weil will be leading it. Barry views
Rabbi Weil as "a very thought-provok-
ing person who will make a tremen-
dous impact on the trip."
Gary and Mirjam Schwarcz of
Oak Park attended the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
Couples Mission to Israel last year
along with Rabbi Weil and his wife,
Yael.
Although they have visited Israel
many times, this trip will be different.
"I've never had it pointed out to me,
`This location is in Tanach, and this is
what happened here,'" Gary says. "It's
a rare opportunity.
"The main idea," says Rabbi Weil, "is
for us to really get in touch with our his-
tory and our heritage. We're going to
teach it, and teach it well." 1-1
