SUSAN TAWIL Special to the Jewish News I is billed as "the Jewish educa- tional experience of a lifetime." The Spiritual Safari, which Rabbi Steven Weil will lead this winter, will use the land of Israel as a "living textbook" to study Torah and Jewish history. "This will be a dynamic, passion- ate, educational experience," says Rabbi Weil. "It's for those with a real interest in Jewish history and Jewish education." Rabbi Weil, of Young Israel of Oak Park, will lead the trip Feb. 7-16. The biblical history of each site will be studied. "For example, we'll study Sefer Shofiim (the Book of Judges) and visit Har Tavor, where (the prophetess) Devorah won the bat- de. And we'll go to Yavneh and to Tzippori, where Yehudah HaNasi wrote the Mishnah and learn mishnayot there." Artifacts of everyday lift found in the Bar Kokhba caves near the Dead Sea. Other sites to be visited include the Old City of Jerusalem; the Bar Kokhba caves; Kever Rachel (Rachel's Tomb) in Bethlehem; Marat Hamachpela (the Tomb of the Patriarchs) in Hebron; Tiberias and the Tomb of the Rambam (Maimonides); the Golan Heights; Har Grizim and Har Eval (where the biblical blessings and curses of Deuteronomy 27-28 were delivered); Haifa and Safed. Source material will be provided at all locations visited. "We'll have a Tanach (Bible) in one hand and a highlighter in the other," says Rabbi Weil.
