THE INTELLIGENT CHICKEN
WHERE SMART PEOPLE EAT
i Ch
had been traveling with his band —
not an ideal situation for a show busi-
ness marriage already on the rocks.
Lucy trusted Oppenheimer, often
balking at lines in early scripts, but
mellowing over the years when she
realized he and the other two writers,
Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll Jr.,
knew exactly what she wanted.
"We were all asking ourselves,"
Gregg quotes Jess: "What do you do
with a comedienne and a Cuban
orchestra leader?"
After many brainstorming and strat-
egy sessions, Jess simply said, "Why
don't we just do a show about a mid-
dle-class working stiff who works very
hard at his job as a band leader, and
likes nothing better than to come home
at night and relax with his wife, who
doesn't like staying home and is dying
to get into show business herself?"
The rest is TV history.
Gregg Oppenheimer's favorite Lucy
episodes? They are the Vitameatavegamin
show, where Lucy gets drunk while
doing a commercial; the show where
she stomps on grapes to make wine;
and the episode with actor William
Holden, where he ignites her false putty
nose while trying to light her cigarette.
"She was more nervous about that
stunt than anything else we did on the
show," Jess Oppenheimer had recalled.
"One of the enduring values of the
program was that it had famous
guests, such as Holden, Bob Hope,
Groucho Marx, Ernie Kovacs."
Laughs, Luck... and Lucy also has
some never-before-published Lucy
scripts and dialogues, as well as candid
photographs and some good show-
business history — before you even
get to the Lucy show creation.
Stuck to the inside back cover is a
72-minute audio CD featuring 13
"lost" scenes from I Love Lucy and My
Favorite Husband.
Gregg Oppenheimer's next project
is a book with the working tide "I
Love Lug's" Classic Scripts, which he
hopes to finish by the show's 50th
anniversary in 2001. fl
Gregg Oppenheimer will auto-
graph copies of his father's auto-
biography, Laughs, Luck... and
