Jewish Vocational Service is half way
toward a goal of $3 million in its
endowment campaign, said Barbara
Nurenberg, JVS executive director.
The 58-year-old agency that began as
a job placement service for the Detroit
Jewish community has turned to
endowments as a way of generating
long-term support and stability, she said.
With a budget of nearly $16 million
this year, and only $55,000 of it coming
from endowment earnings, JVS realized
that support from its 12 funding agen-
cies, including the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit and the United
Way, might decrease in the future.
Boosting endowments has become one
way of solving the problem.
The Southfield-based JVS offers
employment and career development,
vocational and therapeutic rehabilita-
tion, job-skills training and specialized
senior adult services.
"The issue of how to fund the kinds
of services that people expect and need
are more of an issue," Nurenberg said.
"We need to be able to maintain the
level of services that we give."
