ow many times did you sit in class at school wondering how you
were ever going to translate your education to the real world?
Michael Fleischmann, 14, recently spoke on Career Day at
Bloomfield Hills' West Hills Middle School, and his PowerPoint presenta-
tion explained to the eighth-grade audience just how they could put their
skills to work:
"In looking back at what educational skills were helpful in my current
career, I was surprised to realize just how valuable my school background
has been thus far.
"Science has aided my ability to diagnose problems through deductive

reasoning by enabling me to isolate the factor causing the failure through
use of the scientific method.
"Mathematics has definitely had an impact on my ability to program,
calculate and analyze statistics vital to the operation of my company.
"Public speaking has been a crucial skill in tutoring, presenting propos-
als and creating voice-overs. I call upon English skills daily to formulate
written elements of Web pages and compose professional correspondence.
"Even non-academic courses such as gym and art have played an
important role in my professional career.
"Sportsmanship has taught me to 'win' proposals modestly, and lose
them 'graciously'. I know never to misrepresent the products I sell, or to
play unfairly.
"Art has taught me a sense of proportion, balance and aesthetics in
graphic design."

dependability, commitment, responsi-
bility and humility.
Plans for his future are numerous.
Fleischmann would like to attend
either the University of Michigan or
the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. He has no intention to
work for anyone other than himself.
When asked if it's possible to
become another Bill Gates or Steven
Jobs, present-day computer gurus,
Fleischmann smiles.
"Because of the rapid pace of the
development of technology," he says,
"there will always be a window of •
opportunity to find a niche and
expand on new technology.

The computer industry amazes
him, he says, because it is "expanding
not just to business professionals, but
also to my 4-year-old sister, who is
learning computers. This industry
reaches so wide an audience, it just
shows how much power can be har-
nessed to even the common user. "
Still, Fleischmann remains realistic.
"Computers continue to improve
in performance and reliability, but
one frustration is that no matter
how well I figure I know a system, I
still have one or two crashes. In this
industry," he says, "you just don't
know what to expect from one day
to the next." Li
