able to include one of his two sons in the Israeli version of Les Miserables. His New York run has brought him the opportunity to tour concert stages throughout the United Stares. "I have two sons in the Israeli army now, and they are religious like me," Fisher says. "My wife Tova man- aged a medical laboratory when we got married. One of us had to give up a career to be with the kids, so she really sacrificed herself for me. We're very moderate people and believe in `live and let live.' It doesn't bother me if somebody is not keeping the Sabbath. "I still perform as a cantor for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Passover. I go to a country club in the Catskill Mountains and work there. When I'm standing in front of the ark, it's like recharging my bat- teries. It gives me spiritual strength." Fisher has recorded 14 albums, some religious and others secular, and has just finished a new one that has inspirational songs in English. It includes "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," "You'll Never Walk Alone," original songs that he co-wrote and "For the Children." He performed the latter, written by Marvin Hamlisch and Alan and Marilyn Bergman, for a Madison Square Garden concert in tribute to the late Yitzhak Rabin, his personal friend. Although Fisher has stood his employment ground concerning reli- gious observance, he did make another concession when he started entertaining in America. "Dudu is a nickname my grand- mother gave me, and unfortunately, in America, it's a bad name," he explains. "My real name is David, but my friends have always called me Dudu. David is like a grown-up name, and Dudu is more fun and loveable. "I had a lot of problems with Les Mis when they asked how to write my name. I said, `Dudu Fisher,' and they said, 'No way.' Finally they used `David,' but they put the ( Dudu' in brackets." ri Dudu Fisher will perform Never on Friday for the 66th annual Balfour Concert sponsored by the Zionist Organization of America 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at Detroit's Orchestra Hall. $501$751$100.
