O'Connor of New York. This letter
was originally addressed to three Jew-
ish individuals, among them famous
survivor and Shoah author Eli Wiesel.
In it, the esteemed cardinal asks
for forgiveness for any offense he or
anyone else of his faith committed
against the Jewish people, past or
present. He also makes known Pope
John Paul II's proclamation to make
next year's Ash Wednesday a day for
Catholics to atone for centuries of
anti-Semitism.
These overtures toward the Jewish

community should be encouraged.
However, as far as the Shoah, the
unprecedented act of genocide perpe-
trated against the Jewish people and
others, only the six-million innocent
martyrs could have had the right to
forgive; but they cannot.
Yet as we enter the new Jewish
decade of the 5760s, as well as the
Christian new millennium, let's hope
that these gestures of goodwill will
help open a new page in Jewish-
Christian relations.
