LASTING IMPRESSION
CREATING A HIGHER STANDARD

The Model Year 2000
"The message I got was that you
can make a difference one person at
a time," she said. "Those were
courageous parents to have their
children in that school and for the
teachers to be working there.
Other visits included meeting
with mayors and other politicians in
the central Galilee region (the
Detroit Jewish community's
Partnership 2000 sister region as
part of a social, cultural and busi-
ness exchange) and speaking with
the head of the Israel Women's
Network. The group also met with
University of Michigan students on
an archeological dig in Tzippori.
One surprising part of the trip for
Engler was the effect of geography
on the political situation. Although
she had read for years about the
conflicts between the Palestinians
and the Jews, standing in the coun-
try and seeing exactly how close the
two groups must co-exist brought a
deeper understanding of the con-
flict.
"I don't pretend to appreciate all
of the finer points because I don't
live there, but I think we can under-
stand why this is a sensitive issue
and why they need our support so
desperately," Engler said.
Another aspect that impressed
Engler was the strong tie between
Detroit's Partnership 2000 region
and the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
"I think the partnership with that
region is something that all
Michiganians should take pride in.
There is so much to the relationship,
the exchange of ideas and people,"
she said.
The trip also had lighter and
more spiritual moments 'as well.
During visits to historical sites,
Engler learned that no matter how
much Israeli food one eats, one will
still float in the Dead Sea; that
Masada is hauntingly desolate; and
that the Western Wall, a place of
obvious Jewish spirituality, is a mov-
ing site for anyone.
"I really felt my prayers were
being heard there," said Engler, a
40-year-old Christian.
Engler said the trip convinced her
to return to Israel when her 4-year-
old triplet daughters, Hannah,
Margaret and Madeleine, are older
and can appreciate the trip.
"Once they are about 14, at the
age when they can understand, the
age they can go either way in life, I
am taking them," she said. "It is
something they have to see."
Has Arrived.
