in Crown Heights, finding
others who care about
Yiddish language and cul-
ture can be a challenge.
But the World Wide Web, with its
unique ability to transcend geography,
is changing that; the results could be a
minor Yiddish revolution.
A good place to start: Avivale's
Yiddish Page, a labor of love for Aviva
Starkman of Los Angeles. (www.stark-
man.com/aviva/yiddish.html)
The content here is an interesting
mish-mash. (A Yiddish phrase,
remember?) It includes some scholarly
links, but also anecdotes, jokes and
stories that evoke the flavor of Yiddish
conversation.
An example: an old Yiddish lan-
guage advertisement for Keshi-Meshi,
"the best cockroach powder in the
world." The ad is presented in
Yiddish, in Yiddish transliteration and
English. The company touts the prod-
uct's effectiveness, and offers this
unique guarantee: if it doesn't work,
customers are invited to mail the liv-

abcmt JeTrishindiana,

But the real heart of Ms. Starkman's
homepage is an extensive collection of
links to other Yiddish sites, including
organizations that promote Yiddish
language and culture and schools that
offer college-level courses in Yiddish.
Another good jumping-off point for
Yiddish cyberspace is the Mendele
mailing list.
Named after the Yiddish writer
Mendele Mokher Sefarim, the list is
an e-mail forum that deals with just
about everything having to do with
Yiddish.
Like all better mailing lists, this is a
moderated forum, which means there's a
kind of choir director who makes sure
there aren't too many discordant notes.
Want to know about the original
production of The Dybbuk in Vilna?
This is the place.
The tone is still somewhat academic,
but there's something here for just
about everybody.
Sign up for the list at this Web site:
