Orchard Mall, Orchard Lake Road
north of Maple, West Bloomfield.
It is true, authentic Chinese dining ...
This is in much evidence by the many
Orientals who enjoy Cholada Chan's
excellent. cuisine ... So many of the
menu items cannot be found anywhere
else ... and have an individual taste all
their own.
You won't find many places with
plum sauce like that made at Shangri-
La... with crushed pineapple and orange
pieces ... It's delicious over plain rice,
too ...The pepper steak is among the
best to be found ... with green peppers,
red peppers and onions.
Cholada's crab meat and shrimp fried
rice dishes are unlike others ... Both are
white, with no soy or browning ... and
egg whites, instead of egg yolks, are
used ... The fried rice tasties are cooked
first, allowed to stand for 20 minutes,
and then lightly fried in woks ... Brewed
jasmine tea served with meals is not
made beforehand ... only when cus-
tomers arrive at the restaurant.
Shangri-La is also well-noted for its
healthy ways of food preparation.
GET WELL WISHES ... to Free
Press columnist Bob Talbert ... recuperat-
ing after heart bypass surgery ... to
Eleanor Riseman, one of the co-
founders of Infants Service Group ... at
Straith Rehabilitation Hospital ... fol-
lowing a Providence Hospital stay after
tripping over a telephone book and
breaking her pelvis.
SOUNDS LIKE A lot of fun ... the
Kadima fund-raiser, "Laughing Still
Matters" ... with Mark Russell, political
satirist and comedian/pianist, Monday,
Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m., at Orchestra Hall ...
Call Sally Krugel, (248) 559-8235, for
info and tickets.
CONGRATS ... to former localite
Carole Goldman of Delray Beach, Fla.,
... on her 75th birthday ... in town
recently to celebrate with her family and
friends ... to Jordyn Beckwith ... on her
13th birthday.
NEW SHOE-shining gentleman at
Charter House Barber Shop on Orchard
Lake Road's Boardwalk is someone a lot
of guys know ... He's Sam Williams, still
dividing time between the health clubs
at Jewish Community Centers in West
Bloomfield and Oak Park ... Sam's
artistry with leather at Charter House is
Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
15TH ANNUAL Induction Dinner
of Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation,
Monday, Nov. 1, 6 p.m., at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, is again
creating more attention this year with its
1999 Jewish News High School Athlete
