Gershon has been adventurous in her pick of roles, from Face/Offto Red Heat to the aforemen- tioned Showgirls and Bound. This fall she's bound to give off even more heat, starring in The Insider, a feature film about a whistle- blower in the tobacco industry, a true story that led to a scandal that socked Sixty Minutes. This minute, Gershon, who comes from a Conservative Jewish back- ground, looks demure and delicate without "de attitude" of characters past and present. "I don't consciously try to take roles that make me appear tough," says the actress, who once starred as Nancy "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" Sinatra in a mini- series about the late, legendary Frank Sinatra. In notes about her character, it's mentioned that Hall likes to "color outside the lines." Does that please Gershon's palette in real life, too? "I look for fun, exciting, strange characters," she says. "[Hall's] a little bit outside the law. She's a bit of a renegade, a bit of an outlaw. " Gershon seems our there herself: "I'm not very good at listening to rules myself, so I could kind of relate to her, the actress says. "I just think I have a complex when it comes to authori- ty. „ )3 I have it on good authority — series cre- ator/executive producer Kelley — that Gershon's part was actually written for a man, which is ironic given Gershon's gift for playing sul- try and sexy — and sassy. She feels particularly sassy now as the question" is brought up: What did Showgirls — that awful film about those dancers in Las Vegas that proved snake eyes at the box office — do for her career? Did it make her feel like leaving Las Vegas or Hollywood — behind for a while? Actually, says the actress, Showgirls "was great for me. I had a great time, and it only helped me." Truer stuff couldn't be said; Gershon strutted off with rave notices to show for her work in Showgirls. As she did for Bound, which had some critics predicting the actress was bound for greatness. That film, she says, "was, ironically enough, like this part" in Snoops — meant for a man. For some reason, I end up playing the mans roles, whatever that means, says Gershon. Maybe it's just that the mean streets of Hollywood can't decide how to cast her. Whatever the role, maybe Gershon's "reel" appeal lies in her beauty to turn beasts into real-life rogues, to turn round characterizations into ones with edges. Which is why her film appearance in Guinevere, opening in theaters today, seems so appropriate: Gershon co-stars in the film based on the woman of legend who lanced a lot of expectations with one romantic misdeed; her "knight" of passion set King Arthur's Round Table on edge. But this is more a modern-day damsel in a distressing situation, who is bilked blind emotionally by a rogu- ish photographer, a predator with promis- es, wooing his women — his Guineveres — with a vengeance to fulfill their artis- tic potential. The seductive actress doesn't need help from out- siders; she's fulfill- ing her plentiful potential all by herself. I i : Chicken Platter 1 I Includes two I I dishes 1 and a honey wh I roll.
