The vocalist has sung the roles of
Papagena in Mozart's The Magic Flute
and Cherubino in The Marriage of
Figaro and has performed classical,
popular and folk music for San Diego
audiences.
Robert Zelickman, 46, a native
Detroiter who moved to California
when he was 9, developed a love for
music through his attendance at
Detroit Symphony Orchestra concerts.
He began studying clarinet out West,
and after earning his master's degree at
the California Institute of Arts, began
teaching clarinet at the University of
California.
"I love the variety of playing with
different people and playing music in
different genres," says Zelickman, who
also performs with the San Diego
Symphony, San Diego Opera,
Starlight Opera, San Diego Chamber
Orchestra and SONOR, a touring fac-
ulty ensemble dedicated to contempo-
rary music.
"I am most free when I play
klezmer. Perhaps it's because the
music's soul is so approachable, so
straight from the heart," he says.
Zelickman's wife, Joan, a native of
San Diego, met her husband while
they both worked with the Mexico

City Philharmonic. A gradu-
ate of SUNY — Purchase,
she also has worked for the
Calgary Philharmonic,
Oregon Symphony and the
Vera Cruz Philharmonic.
After returning to San
Diego, Joan Zelickman became
a member of the San Diego
Symphony, San Diego Opera and
the San Diego Chamber Orchestra
and performs regularly with the
Starlight Musical Theatre.
Weller, enrolled in a doctoral pro-
gram at the University of California
— San Diego, has been playing jazz,
classical, popular and new music for
the past 15 years. She has worked with
Davis in a duo that presents all kinds
of music.
"I was looking for a way to express
the Humanistic credo, and I wanted
to put it in a fresh art form for con-
certs," says Weller, 39. "At the heart of
my work are the ancient melodies,
which I am recontexturalizing into a
late-20th-century environment. I also
have newly written music.
"I think a heightened awareness of
ethnicity and interest in the music of
the world is causing an interest in
Jewish music to rise. Our music
embodies Jewish history and culture,
and all people can identify with the
feelings and sentiments." LL
