get something out of it. I get expo-
sure, and it's wonderful to be included
in any type of exhibition."
Freedman's work also is part of many
private collections. In her home, she
likes to surround herself with work of
Michigan artists.
Although she is very serious about
her own professional direction,
Freedman has fun watching her 4-year-
old granddaughter, Sydney, and her 3-
year-old grandson, Seth, try their hands
at painting. She looks forward to watch-

"Pod Form." For the Belle Isle exhibit,
Freedman used a mixture of acrylics
and oils in shades of crimson, ocher and
deep purple to form a sculpture built of
layers over particle board and a chick-
en-wire form.

ing 11-month-old twins Lindsey and
Rachael have those same experiences.
"I bought the grandchildren an
easel, paint and brushes and encour-
aged them to get messy," Freedman
says. "Every child is good at art, and I
like to just let them explore and inves-
tigate the materials." ❑

Marcia Freedman's work can be

Creek Center for the Arts, 407
Pine, Rochester, (248) 651-4110;
through Oct. 20 at the Sherry
