Bubbe's Back Porch is a Web site
that uses this new interactive medium
to bring a measure of that oral tradi-
tion back into a world where back
porches and what they represent are a
rarity.
The site offers a modest collection
of low-key stories online, but its real
value may be in its creator's determi-

nation to get visitors to talk to the
people in their lives — in the case of
Bubbe's porch, the emphasis is on
Jewish women — and record and
share their stories in ways that take
advantage of the Web's ability to meld
pictures and text.
Bubbe's homepage opens with a
picture of a generic-looking grand-
mother welcoming visitors, and an
invitation: "Come in, sit down, share
