Sukka's YgH Compliant

there's a sukka born every minute, the
Shevin family has taken an extra step to
be sure they can enjoy their holiday without
unforeseen mishap. Their sukka is the only
one in the nation certified as Year 2000 com-
pliant. A sign-affixed to the structure testifies
to this, so of
course it
must be true.
"At first I
scoffed at the
idea," said
Eliahu

asked myself,
would my
sukka be operational next New Year's? And I
had to admit, it wouldn't." Shevin dismisses
as irrelevant critics' claims that most sukkot
will have been dismantled long before Jan. 1,
2000.
As a veteran of a year 2000 remediation
project, Shevin felt qualified to confirm the
structure himself. "The sukka is certified, and
I'm confident I am certifiable. Actually, the
whole process took only a few minutes —
l ong enough to print the sign. I've seen whole
computer systems okayed with much less
effort.
He also offered this advice for those who
lack the time or resources to ensure their
sukka- is compliant. "Just stop using yours on
or before Dec. 31, and don't start again until
after the first of the year."

'heek as this autobiographical account.

abbi Yisrael Meir HaCohen Kagan of Radin
(1838-1933), a small town in Poland, is popu-
larly known as the Chofetz Chaim (meaning
one who desires life) after the title of his major work, pub-
lished anonymously in the 1870s about the laws and attitudes pertain-
ing to lashon hara (evil speech or slander). He was loved and revered
throughout the world as one of the foremost scholars of his time — a
humble, pious and saintly man who was respected by, and acknowl-
edged as, one of the most important leaders in world Jewry.
Another major publication of his was the Mishnah Berurah, a monu-
mental commentary on the Arach Chaim (daily living) section of the
Shulchan Aruch (the Code of Jewish Law compiled by Rabbi Joseph
Caro in the 16th century).
