IRP Plans Fall Mini-Series
"Jewishness in Contemporary
America: Shaping a Jewish
Renaissance for the
21st Century" and
"Journey Through the
History of Music" are
topics for the fall mini-
series to be offered by
the Institute for Retired
Professionals for six
consecutive Fridays
beginning Oct. 8.
The morning sessions on
Jewishness will run from 10:30 a.m.-
noon; the afternoon sessions on
music from 1-2:30 p.m. The series
will be presented in the Janice
Charach Epstein Museum/Gallery at
the D. Dan & Betty Kahn Building
of the Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield.
Professor Armand Lauffer of the
University of Michigan will open the
series on Oct. 8 with a discussion of
"Planning for Our Grandchildren's
Future." On Oct. 15, Penny
Blumenstein, president of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
will speak on "Women of Vigor —
Not Valor: Empowerment of Jewish
Women."
George Zeltzer, co-chair of the
Cohn-Haddow program in Jewish
Studies at Wayne State University, will
be the speaker on Oct. 22 when the
topic will be "Academia Paves the
Way: Advent of Jewish Studies
Programs." On Oct. 29, "Internet,
Web sites, Homepages and
Networking" will the
topic of Rabbi Daniel
Nevins of Congregation
Adat Shalom.
Completing the morn-
ing series will be Rabbi
Dannel Schwartz of
Temple Shir Shalom, who
will discuss "The Search
for Spirituality" on Nov.
5, and IRP member David Hoptman
speaks on "Yiddishkeit is PC:
Transitioning Jewish/Yiddish Culture
into the Modern Mainstream" on
Nov. 12.
Professor James Nissen of
University of Michigan-Dearborn
will lead the first four sessions of the
music series. The sessions will focus
on the Baroque Period on Oct. 8;
Classical Period, Oct..15; Romantic
Period, Oct. 22; and Modern Period,
Oct. 29.
Piano soloist Pauline Martin will
speak on "Elements of Musical Style
in Performance" in the last two ses-
sions on Nov. 5 and 12 and will
illustrate her presentations with
piano selections.
Al Ascher is chairman of the mini-
series committee. Julius Harwood and
Bea Moss are developer and coordina-
tors of the series segments, assisted by
David Hoptman, Sidney Resnick,
Ethel Silberg and Irving Ritter.

Series Opens
Building on the success of the
Citizenship Across America program,
the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society
has developed an in-depth training
program for the professionals that pre-
pare people to undergo naturalization.
The two-day HIAS workshop will
be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct.
12-13, at the D. Dan & Betry Kahn
Building of the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield.
Citizenship Across America 1999 will
review the basics and address many of
the questions raised since passage of
the 1996 immigration law. The natu-
ralization process will be discussed and
a look taken at special forms, such as
the N-400 (Naturalization
Application).

Eilu Eilu, the adult Jewish learn-
ing project of the Detroit
Conservative movement, will offer
a new latte and learning series with
Rabbi Aaron Bergman titled
"Tearing Off the Coat of Many
Colors — The Real Story of Joseph
and the Men and Women Who
Loved and Hated Him."
Starting Oct. 4, the six-week
series will meet 10-11 a.m. every
Monday at Borders Books and
Music, 30995 Orchard Lake Road,
Farmington Hills. Borders provides
complimentary coffee and tea for
participants.
Each lecture is self-contained and
may be attended independently.
The tuition is $24 for the series
or $5 per session.
