not just writing a check but by

Every food item donated is used;
nothing is wasted. Kosher items go
directly from Yad Ezra to the clients.
Non-kosher items go to sister agen-
cies, such as the Food Bank of
Oakland County and Gleaners
Community Food Bank, which dis-
tribute food to the needy through
soup kitchens and churches. .
Each year, the Yom Kippur Food
Drive provides between 24,000-
28,000 pounds of donated food for
the clients of Yad Ezra, enugh to
help clients for 2-3 weeks. Yad Ezra
distributes 42,000 pounds of food
every month to more than 1,000
families.
C.J. Weingarden, 13, an Adat
Shalom Synagogue member, was vol-
unteering as part of the mitzvah pro-
gram for his bar mitzvah. He was
required to volunteer three times;
last week was his last "required"
time. "I have already signed up to
volunteer again," he said. "I like
helping people. It is fun."
Other volunteers included college
students who are part of Hillel of
Metro Detroit(HMD).
Amid all the boxes of food, Luger
said, "It is heartwarming to see the
generosity of the community. Yad
Ezra is greatful for the support of
the community and its embracing of
this effort so graciously."
