using the fragile huts associated with the
ancient festival of Sukkot to draw atten-
tion to a modern political and social
issue — lack Of affordable housing in
the city.
"Since the sukkot are temporary
houses, we felt that this is a metaphor
for our current housing crisis in the
Twin Cities metro area," said Susan
Jacobson, director of public programs at
the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, which
is sponsoring the project.
Although the museum is primarily
showcasing six models of sukkot
throughout the city that were designed
by local architects and artists, it is also
providing information about the Jewish
holiday, and tour guides tell visitors that
Sukkot is a holiday of charity and jus-
tice for the poor and homeless.
According to the Metropolitan
[nterfaith Council on Affordable
Housing, the home vacancy rate in
Minneapolis has declined to 1.6 percent
i n 1999, and average rents have
ncreased approximately 5.9 percent; in

New York (JTA) — Just weeks after
launching a marketing campaign
informing North American Jewish
college students of free, 10-day trips
to Israel this winter, the Birthright
Israel project has more would-be trav-
elers than available spots.
Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish
Campus Life reports more than 6,000
people have applied for the 3,000
spots it is offering as one of the orga-
nizations participating in Birthright
Israel's 2000 campaign.
A Birthright spokeswoman said the
other 11 providers are also getting a large
response and that the number of calls to
Birthright Israel itself has increased ten-
fold since the campaign began.
