HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CEN-
TER, 6602 W. Maple Road, located
adjacent to the Kahn JCC Building, is
devoted to memorializing the six mil-
lion European Jews killed by the Nazis
between 1933-45. This is not recom-
mended for young children.
The museum describes the rise of
Adolf Hitler and the 2,000-year his-
tory of anti-Semitism. The main hall
depicts the horrors of the concentra-
tion camps, with documentary film
clips, dioramas, photo montages and
artifacts, such as prisoner uniforms
and a Zyklon B gas canister.
A perpetual flame burns in mem-
ory of the 1,200 Jewish communi-
ties destroyed during the Holocaust.
Hours: 10 a.m.-4p. m. Sun.-Thurs.; 9
a.m. -1 p.m. Fri. (September-May).
Tours at 1 p.m. on Sun.; also for
groups by arrangement. No admission

MORRIS AND EMMA SCHAVER
LIBRARY-ARCHIVE, housed inside
the Holocaust Memorial Center,
contains 10-12,000 books and
videos relating to the Holocaust,
Jewish history, German history and
Jewish-Christian relations. There are
documentary videos and oral history
testimonies of survivors and libera-
tors, as well as Swiss bank account
lists, and "The Heritage
Connection," a database of the
1,200 Jewish communities destroyed
in Europe.

RABBI LEO M. FRANKLIN
ARCHIVES, 14 Mile Road and
Telegraph, Bloomfield Township, on
the second floor of Temple Beth El,
houses photos, writing and personal
papers of the temple's rabbis, as well as
original issues of the Jewish Chronicle
and the Jewish News, and other mate-
rials reflecting Detroit Jewish history
dating back to the 1800s.
Downstairs, the Temple's Shapiro
Museum holds a collection of silver
and other Judaica, such as shofars,
antique Kiddush cups and more.

Exploring The Past
MICHIGAN JEWISH HISTORI-
CAL SOCIETY, 6600 W. Maple
Road, West Bloomfield, sponsors lec-
tures and workshops throughout the
year, as well as slide shows. Its periodic
bus tours of old Jewish Detroit high-
light former synagogues and Jewish
neighborhoods. The MJHS also runs
Jewish cemetery tours.
Upcoming programs include an
Oct. 10 tour of Detroit's Elmwood
Cemetery, which includes the 150-
year-old Beth El section, and an
"Introduction to Jewish Genealogy"
lecture by MJHS President Jim Grey.
