chamber music programs.
Founded some 10 years ago by
Michael Tilson Thomas, who remains
music director, the New World
Symphony trains young, outstanding
instrumentalists for the symphonic
world with the idea that they will revi-
talize American orchestras through
outreach and educational initiatives
that they plan and conduct.
"I enjoy a lot of pop music," says
Post, who became one of James
Taylor's touring conductors after lead-
ing the Pittsburgh orchestra for a
Taylor concert. "I grew up playing
pop music and jazz so I feel very com-
fortable with it, although it requires a
different sensibility from a lot of clas-
sical music.
"When I get involved with the pop
world, I have to bring myself back to
the classical style. I don't perform a lot
of pop music, but I enjoy and consci-
entiously keep that separate from
mainstream, classical music, which is
what I do most of the time."
Post, who is single and considers
himself a cultural Jew, thought most
about religion when he was working
in Israel.
"I identify with Jewish values and
culture, especially the emphasis on
questioning and learning, but I've
never been attracted to the practice of
organized religion," he says. "I'm very
curious about it, and it may be in my
future somewhere.
"I'm curious about all sorts of
things, and I love the outdoors. I like
playing tennis, fly fishing and snorkel-
ing. I also enjoy reading and all sorts
of cultural activities. When I get a
chance to go out and hear music, it's
usually not symphonic because I listen
to classical music every day.
"I haven't been music director of an
orchestra, and that's my goal. In addi-
tion to that, I want to keep guest con-
ducting and working with as many
orchestras as possible presenting a
large variety of music." II
