"We all sort of got used to my
many trips and the various moves
from city to city during my early
years with the company. That's life in
a large corporation, and corporate
families like ours have to get used to
it. I can certainly say that life at GM
has always been exciting."
Kutner sometimes takes a 20-hour
round trip over two days for one
meeting in Hawaii, or a two-day
jaunt to Brazil or a European or Far
Eastern country. "Fortunately, I sleep
well on planes, and most of the travel
is by company plane rather than com-
mercial jet, which makes it easier," he
said.
He is provided with heavy security
in certain countries, mainly in
Central and South America, but has
not been the victim of any incidents.
One time, a limousine he used in
Colombia was ambushed the week
before he got there, but no Americans
were involved.
Kutner lives in West Bloomfield
and belongs to Wabeek Country
Club. He drives a shiny new
Chevrolet. Corvette that never has
seen the inside of a car wash. "I don't
trust it with anyone ... I wash it
myself," he said.
Kutner financially supports a num-
ber of Jewish organizations, but his
pet charity is the Boys & Girls Clubs
of Southeastern Michigan. He has
served on its board since 1996. Last
year, his leadership efforts helped the
clubs raise $800,000 — $300,000 at
one golf outing alone. He also is on
the board of the National Minority
Supplier Development Council and
of Oakland University, and he is a
member of the Automotive Advisory
Council for the National Industrial
Technology Institute. fl
