raise the level of Jewish commit-
ment.
The sukka is also symbolic of
unity. The Talmud teaches us that an
individual need not use his own
sukka to fulfill his obligation of
"dwelling in a sukka," but he may
use anyone's sukka. It says, "all of
Israel are worthy of sitting in one
sukka." Dwelling in a sukka, a tem-
porary, fragile hut, reminds us of
how fragile and vulnerable our
security and existence truly is. We
may feel confident about our safety
because we live in "the land of the
free" or because the IDE is militarily
advanced or because of a host of
other circumstances that we could
posit. But reality is that these are

illusions.
Ultimately, our security is God's
protection, which hovers over us
like a shadow when we dwell in
our sukka. All Jews are combined
under one sukka. All Jews are uni-
fied by a common destiny. All Jews
must recognize that our existence is
like a sukka, vulnerable to the wind
that can blow and destroy it, yet
protected by the comforting shelter
of divine providence.
The midrash clearly shows that the
resounding theme of the Sukkot holi-
day is unity — unity of the self,
unity of the people and sharing a
unified destiny. One of the greatest
reasons for joy and celebrating is
when we, the Jewish People, rise
above our differences and stand as
