The outdoor program began with
a sing-along with Cantor Ralph
Goren, followed by the blessings
for Shabbat led by Rena Cohen,
assistant director of Beth Hayeled,
surrounded by 30 past and present

teachers.
Following a group recitation of
the haMotzi by the children in
attendance, directed by Janet Pont,
director of Shaarey Zedek's Eugene
and Marcia Applebaum Jewish Par-
enting Center in West Bloomfield,
the families scattered on blankets
and at tables for an outdoor Shab-

Beth Hayeled tradition,
Weintraub expressed opti-
mism for the program contin-
uing another 50 years.

bat dinner.
Displayed at the event was an
acrylic-and-ink family tree created
by artist Marsha Clements along
with synagogue member Beth
Rubenstein. It was inscribed with
the names of 150 Shaarey Zedek
families. Beth Hayeled Director
Weintraub describes the tree as "a
trunk with powerful sayings from the
TOrah" and roots representing the
various buildings where the Beth
Hayeled has been housed.
Since 1948, when 90 families
applied for the first 30 places in
the nursery school, it has "served
as a model for integrated Judaic
and secular schools," says Rabbi
Irwin Groner. Established at a time
when "the idea of a
nursery school was not
prevalent," he says the
school has become "a
very special place in
the educational land-
scape of our communi-
ty.

Weintraub saw the
evening as "a warm,
friendly, freilich atmos-
phere of reminiscing"
by students and staff,
whom she described as
enduring in their care
and love of children.
