Himmler Offered
Jews For Freedom

Argentine Leader
Hits Desecration

London (JTA)— SS chief Heinrich
Himmler sought to win asylum for
himself and 200 leading Nazis in the
final days of World War II by offer-
ing cash and the freedom of 3,500
Jews held in concentration camps,
according to classified British intelli-
gence documents released last Friday
in London.
According to the documents, the
concentration camp inmates were to
be sent to Switzerland in two train-
loads.

Buenos Aires (JTA) — Argentina's pres-
ident said he is appalled after vandals
destroyed more than 60 tombstones at
a Jewish cemetery Sunday near Buenos
Aires. "It is an act to be condemned in
every sense," Carlos Menem said a day
later.
The La Tablada cemetery has been
the target of several similar attacks,
most recently in December 1997.

Disney Exhibit
Draws Boycott

Orlando
Arab American and
American Muslim groups called
Tuesday for a boycott against the
Walt Disney Co. The groups object
to the way Jerusalem is portrayed in
an Israeli exhibit planned at Disney's
EPCOT Center in Florida.
Referring to plans for the Israeli
pavilion as "propaganda disguised as
entertainment," American Muslims
for Jerusalem is calling for the boy-
cott because "Disney has failed to
seriously address" concerns about
the exhibit, which it says portrays
Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

On Vouchers

New York (JTA) — U.S. Democratic
presidential contender Bill Bradley
said he does not think school vouch-
ers are "a national answer" to the edu-
cational problems facing the country,
though he would support them as "an
experiment."
The issue has sharply divided the
American Jewish community.

Deportation

New York (JTA)
The United States
recently launched deportation proceed-
ings against a man it alleges served as

Special Investigations charges that
Michael Gruber, 84, served at the
Sachsenhausen concentration camp
from September 1942 through
December 1944. Gruber, a native of
Croatia and an Austrian citizen, immi-
grated to the United States in 1956.

Arafat Creates
New Force

Jerusalem (JTA) — Palestinian
Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat
ordered the creation of a new security
arm that will operate in the West
Bank and Gaza Strip, the Israeli daily
Haaretz reported Tuesday.
The paper said Bashir Naffa, 37, an
Intifada activist who was deported in
1988 and allowed to return to the
autonomous areas in 1994, was cho-
sen to head the new unit.
The paper quoted sources as saying
that Arafat's decision reflected internal
tensions within existing Palestinian
security forces.

Iranian Says
Jews Confessed

New York (JTA) —,Some of the 13
Jews held in Iran on charges of spying
for Israel and the United States have
confessed, a top Iranian judiciary offi-
cial was quoted as saying Monday.
"The evidence against them was
mostly based on these confessions,"
the official, who provided no further
details about the confessions, told the
daily newspaper Iran News. He added
that a trial of the 13 will not be held
in the near future because several wit-
nesses are abroad.
Iran has come under international
pressure to release the detainees, who
were arrested in March.

Bibi May Face
More Questions

Jerusalem (JTA)
Israeli police may
summon former Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife,
Sara, for further questioning, after
contradictions emerged between their
testimonies and that of a private con-
tractor who allegedly carried out ser-
vices for them for free.
