But, on a sadder note, officials acquiesced quietly in the shut- down of the 46-year-old Sinai Hospital, -which was merged with nearby Grace Hospital by the Detroit Medical Center. Meanwhile, from Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, through Sukkot and Chanuka, through Passover and Tisha b'Av and finally back to the High Holidays again, the Jewish calendar offers continuing opportunities for reflection and celebration. At other times, special ceremonies — completing a new Torah scroll, for example, or breaking ground for a new building as the Sephardic community did — signify different mileposts on the religious or secular calendar.
