Cancer AllSWCf. Civilian Citations Two heroes in Dr. Reuven Bar-Levav shooting are honored. Be a Wise Guy: The Facts on Prostate Cancer Presented by: HARRY KIRSBAUM StaffWriter T wo men responsible for saving lives during the fatal shooting of a Southfield psychiatrist were presented with citations for heroism at the Southfield City Council meeting Tuesday night. About 5 p.m. on June 11, Ronald Rissman and James Stanislaw were in Dr. Reuven Bar-Levav's offices in Southfield, when former patient Joseph Brooks Jr., a 27-year-old Plymouth Township man, entered and opened fire with a handgun Brooks killed Dr. Bar-Levav, 72, a Detroit resident, and patient Emmy Gregg, 45, of Huntington Woods. Four others were hurt. Brooks then killed himself. While Brooks was reloading, Rissman ran toward an interior door, shutting and locking it, while Stanislaw used a cell phone to sum- mon police. "They were faced with a very dif- ficult and highly stressed situation that not only put them into a dan- gerous situation, but also caused them personal bodily harm," said Joseph E. Thomas, Southfield police chief, noting that both men were wounded. "They rose above that and, when faced with immediate danger, chose to try and protect other people. As far as I'm con- cerned, the death and devastation would have been much worse if they had not taken the action that they did." Brooks shot the prominent psy- chiatrist in the waiting room of his Town Center office, then entered the first of two doors leading to Dr. Bar-Levav's therapy room and began firing. Even when Rissman and Stanislaw were shot, "they continued to try to barricade the door, and they relayed clear, concise and relevant informa- tion to the responding officers," Chief Thomas said. "We were in that building in 71 seconds, and we responded to that situation based on the information given by one of those gentlemen." P1 Howard M. Sandler, M.D. Radiation Oncologist John T. The picture of Mark Kowalsky, new president of the benefactors of Jewish Home and Aging Services, was misidentified last week ("Sports Host To Speak," page 53) as Mike Stone, WDFN-AM sportscaster and guest speaker at the communal organization's annual sports night and installation. The installation was held Sept. 23. The correct pictures of Kowalsky and Stone are at right. The six-ingredient noodle kugel recipe published Sept. 17 (page 124) should have stated: pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
