Strength Of Mind DAVID SACHS Editorial Assistant A rnold Feuerman's intellect was as deep as it was wide. A Mensa member and an inventor holding 20 interna- tional patents, he felt that the mind could cure human disease. Mr. Feuerman, of Bloomfield Hills, died Sept. 17. He is most widely known as the head of Arnold Automotive Group, with Lincoln- Mercury and Mazda dealerships, and as an officer in national and local automobile dealer associations. During World War II, Mr. Feuerman, then an FBI agent, was diverted to the White House to help plan and organize the allotment of materials to thousands of contractors. When Mr. Feuerman was diag- nosed with prostate cancer in 1972, according to Rabbi Irwin Groner of Congregaton Shaarey Zedek, "Arnold was determined to fight for life and to remind himself that strength, determi- nation and confidence would enable him to have a fine quality of life. "What Arnold discovered was the capacity of his mind and his faith and his spirit to overcome the ravages of ), his disease. Mr. Feuerman was diagnosed with liver cancer in 1995. Two years later, according to Rabbi Groner, "He attended a seminar conducted by doc- tors who brought together hepatolo- gists to try to understand why Arnold Feuerman was still alive — he had been operated on and diagnosed to have no more that rwo to six months left to live. "The doctors could come to no conclusion. The human mind was very much involved. Outlook, includ- ing the patient's reasons for staying MILDRED BLACK, 79, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., died Sept. 17. Mrs. Black is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Kandel-Koslow and Mark Koslow and grandchildren Danielle and Jonathan Kandel and Ilicia Koslow. His wife Thelma said that Mr. Feuerman refused further treatment at that point and survived another two years. Among his inventions were an automobile fuel injection system and a "Diamond Eye" sewing needle that can be threaded by a blind person. He served as a board member of the Michigan Cancer Foundation beginning in 1972 and remained an honorary life board member of its suc- cessor agency, the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Mr. Feuerman was a Mason and a member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, a life member of B'nai B'rith and Mensa. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Feuerman; daughters and sons-in-law Lisa and David Yarnell of Connecticut, Bonnie and Sam Cherrin of West Bloomfield; son and daughter-in-law Maury and Celia Feuerman of West Bloomfield; grand- children Brent and Chase Yarnell, Lauren, Andrea, Matthew and Blake Feuerman and Alec and Brendan Cherrin; brother and sister-in-law George and Rosita Feuerman of Florida and sisters and brothers-in-law Gertrude Pensler of Farmington Hills and Bede and Dr. Burton Epstein of Colorado. She is survived by her husband, Sylvester G. Bogliolo, children Jeffrey Tarnow, Julie Copeland; grandchildren Jacob Tarnow, Hannah and Claire Copeland; brother-in-law Harvey Silverman (Diane Harris). Mrs. Brooks was a retired nurse and a member of the Mt. Sinai Hospital Alumni Association.
