Klezmer
Music Galore

I

is easy to become a Klezmer
fanatic. The music is infectious,
and it taps into collective mem-
ories of our Tewish past; it's cul-
tural history with a jazzy beat.
Ari Davidow is a genuine fanatic,
which is a good thing for klezmer
lovers everywhere. His "Klezmer
Shack" Web site offers an astonishing
amount of information about the
music and its practitioners, laid out
for easy access.
The site opens with news items
about the klezmer world mixed in
with some of Davidow's observations
on the state of the klezmer revival.
A search box at the top of the
screen lets you locate klezmer infor-
mation quickly; a "Klez Folk
Online" section lists a huge number
of klezmer musicians, singers and
enthusiasts with their own Web
sites. Want to send a fan letter to
your favorite klezmer musician?
Chances are you can find an e-mail
address here.
More than anything else, this direc-
tory shows how this wonderful music
has caught on around the world.
Another section offers reviews of
klezmer CDs, many with RealAudio
clips that will let you hear short snip-
pets on your computer. You can also
check out a constantly changing
Klezmer Top Ten list.
There are links to other Klezmer
and Jewish music sites, links to sheet
music, instruments and record labels
and radio stations that play klezmer
music.
There are even klezmer classified
ads, including musicians and bands
looking to hook up. ("Tsatskelehs, the
only all-girl klezmer band in
Minnesota, is looking for a lead play-
)),
er. )
Don't know what "Klezmer-Funk"
is? You can find out here.
If you're a klezmer fanatic, this site
may be the answer to your prayers; if
you're not, Davidow's enthusiasm and
awesome collection of information
may make you one.

SPECIAL SNEAK PREVIEW

Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sat.,
Sept. 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th

A lot of women are so afraid of
breast cancer they don't want to
hear about it.
And that's what frightens me.
Because those women won't
practice breast self-examination
regularly.
Those women, particularly
those over 35, won't ask their doc-
tor about a mammogram.
Yet that's what's required for
breast cancer to be detected
early. When the cure rate is 90%.
And when there's a good chance
it won't involve the loss of a
breast.
But no matter what it involves,
take it from someone who's been
through it all.
Life is just too wonderful to
give up on. And, as I found out,
you don't have to give up on any
of it. Not work, not play, not even
romance.
Oh, there is one thing, though.
You do have to give up being
afraid to take care of yourself.
