ugene Applebaum, the dynamic entre-
preneur who founded and built Arbor
Drugs into the nation's eighth largest
drugstore chain before selling it last year
to CVS Corp., is once again giving
something back to the community.
For three weeks, it has been the best-kept secret in metro
Detroit that Applebaum and his wife, Marcia, are con-
tributing a whopping $5 million gift to local Jewish pro-
grams. Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit officials
call it the largest capital donation ever made to local Jewish
institutions and programs.
The amount of the donation replicates the $5 million
that Applebaum gave in September 1998 to his alma
mater, Wayne State University. That was the largest single
personal gift ever to WSU. Applebaum, a WSU pharmacy
graduate, is chairing the fund-raising drive for a new build-
ing to house WSU's College of Pharmacy and Allied
Health Sciences. The goal is another $11 million.
Although Applebaum does not seek honors or tributes,
in recognition of his latest donation, the 196-acre Jewish
