Jewish Identity Is Explored

Scholars and leaders from many
countries will explore the topic of a
traditional lifestyle being the answer
for liberal Jews who no longer
believe in the premises of the old
religion. This will take place at
Colloquium '99 from Oct. 7-10 at
the Pivnick Center for Humanistic
Judaism in Farmington Hills.
Faculty for the colloquium will
include Israel political leader
Shulamit Aloni, founder of the
Israeli civil rights movement; Ze'ev
Chafets, Israeli journalist and
author; Professor Dan Cohn-
Sherbok of the University of Wales,
Reform rabbi and writer on Jewish
themes; Marcia Falk, creator of new
Jewish liturgy that includes a femi-
nist perspective; Tirzah Firestone,
rabbi of the Renewal movement;
Yaakov Malkin of the College for
Pluralistic Judaism/Jerusalem and
the organizer of Secular Judaism in
the Jewish State; Professor Jack
Jacobs of City University of New

York, scholar of Jewish radicalism in
Eastern Europe; and Rabbi Sherwin
Wine, founder of Humanistic
Judaism. Other participants include
Professor Emanuel Goldsmith of
Queen's College, Professor Joseph
Chuman of Columbia University
and Rabbi Daniel Friedman of
Chicago.
A debate is taking place in the
Jewish world between those who
want to return and those who still
want to pursue creative alternatives;
the colloquium will address this.
Colloquium '99 is sponsored by
the International Institute for
Secular Humanistic Judaism, the
educational arm of the Secular
Humanistic Jewish movement,
training rabbis and leaders for con-
gregations and community. All the
events of Colloquium '99 are open
to the public. For information
about registration, call (248) 476-
9532, or visit the Web site at
