Tapestry 1999
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield presents Tapestry 1999: The
Art of Jewish Living, 8 p.m. Saturday,
Oct. 16. Following a traditional
Havdala service, an opening program
will include a photographic exhibit. A
Year in the Life of Shaarey Zedek will
be hosted by Dorie Shwedel and the
PR&W Traveling Dance Theatre's pre-
sentation of Postcards from Israel.
The following sessions will then be
offered: Bibliodrama: An exploration of
the meaning of the Torah through role-
playing techniques guided by Rabbi
Stephen Weiss; Wine Tasting: Simon
Rotberg of Cloverleaf Market will
demonstrate that there is much more
to wine tasting than sipping a bottle of
concord grape Manischewitz; Israeli
Dancing: Steven Lee Weintraub and
Sharona Paller Rubinstein of PR&W
Traveling Dance Theatre will teach a
dance class; Explorations in Modern
Jewish Music: Cantor Ralph Goren will
help participants explore modern
trends in Jewish music, with a discus-
sion session even for non-singers;
Modern Israeli Poetry: A reflection of
the Israeli Soul: Nira Lev, director of
Hebrew Programs at the Hebrew
Interactive Learning Center at the
Agency for Jewish Education will help
participants discover controversial
issues in Israeli society, through modern
Israeli poetry; Virtual Judaism: Noah
Krugel of EPK Design will offer an
interactive tour of the many Internet
Web sites available on Jewish topics, no
computer experience is necessary) and
As Orthodoxy Meets Conservative
Jewry: Encounters in Israel: Scholar-in-
Residence Rabbi Benjamin Segal will
explore the struggle for religious plural-
ism - in Israeli society.
A dessert afterglow will be provided
by Quality Kosher Catering, with coffee
drinks from Viva Cappuccino, and
musical entertainment by pianist Carole
Lasser and flutist Nikola Lemberg.
Event co-chairs are Lori Silverstein
and Juliann Kovan. Committee mem-
bers include Marc. L. Cohen, Rhonda
Dean, Shelli Dorfman, Patti Kelter, Lisa
Langnas, Jennifer L. Mattler, Tracey
Niskar, Dorie Shwedel, Sammi Siegel,
Valerie Sirlin, Teri Stiebel and Debby

Tapestry 1999 will take place at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 27375
Bell Road, Southfield.
