Schostaks Chair
Hospice Care Benefit

A rare neurological genetic disorder
took the life of a couple's year-old
daughter in 1996. During her last
days, parents David and Elise
Schostak found help for their whole
family through Hospice of Michigan.
Now to boost awareness of the hos-
pice's services for children, the
Schostaks are serving as honorary co-
chairs for this year's Children's
Hospice Benefit. It's scheduled for
Sunday, Sept. 19, at GameWorks in
Great Lakes Crossing.
At 11 months, Jayne Schostak
became ill with a disorder called
Leigh's. Learning there was no cure,
her parents contacted the Southfield-
based hospice. Its staff worked to give
the Schostak family the tools and con-
fidence they needed to cope during
Jayne's final six weeks of life.
"I can't describe the feeling I had
when they were waiting there to help,"
Elise Schostak said. "It was a very
frightening experience to bring home
my sick baby. I was afraid I wouldn't
know what to do.
"The hospice staff held our hands
every step of the way," she added.
"They didn't make it less sad or less
tragic, but they made it less frighten-
ing, and they helped us learn to cope
with the reality of losing Jayne."
Hospice of Michigan is one of 13
hospices worldwide with a pediatric
team. It provided the social worker
who helped Jayne's siblings, Jacob, 11,

and Dana, 9, deal with the experience
of having a sick sister and with the
anxiety and sadness they felt about her
death.
"The social worker was wonderful
with my children," Elise Schostak
said. "They looked forward to her vis-
its over the time that Jayne was ill.
"During this period, the highlight
of my day was when the nurse came,
and when the social worker came to
be with my children. They were very
honest and open every step of the way
— and this helped prepare us."
The hospice provided spiritual sup-
port through its Jewish Family
Services program.
Every April 18, the Schostaks
remember Jayne on the day that was
her birthday. Said her mother: "We
celebrate Jayne's life. We are forever
changed because of her."

The Children's Hospice benefit
runs 1-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at
GameWorks in Great Lakes
Crossing, Auburn Hills. Activities
for all ages are planned. For young
children, there will be face paint-
ing, magic, clowns and story-
telling. The ticket price includes
unlimited play of interactive video
