Although 260 attended the
"Update and Insight" annual luncheon
to witness the installation of the orga-
nization's officers, including ADL
Chairman Richard Nodel (Michael
Horowitz completed his term as presi-
dent), it was Granholm they came to
hear. She didn't disappoint.
Sounding like a mother reading a
scary story to a child, Granholm
spoke in hushed tones about James
Byrd Jr., the black man dragged to
his death behind a truck on a Texas
back road, and the shootings at the
North Valley Jewish Community
Center in suburban Los Angeles.
"How can a person be so con-
sumed by hatred that it burns out his
heart?" she asked. "What could have
happened to a child to allow him to
grow into an angry dragon that
breathes fire scorching the earth with
hatred and distrust and racism?"
Referring to the Purim tradition
of using noisemakers to drown out
evil Haman's name, she suggested
that these perpetrators' names should
not be uttered.
"If we speak (of them) only (as)
the killers of James Byrd, perhaps we
can send a message that we value the
victim, and avoid creating a martyr
of the killer," she said.
Granholm touted recent legal
actions from her office and the ADL
as practical solutions to actions and
messages of hate.
The Attorney General's office is
defending the Michigan Department
of Corrections in a U.S. District
Court case after it refused the
Church of Jesus Christ Christians to
practice as a religion, she said.
"The so-called 'Church of the
Aryan Nations' has no place behind
prison walls," she said. A high-tech
crimes division also has been set up
to monitor hate groups on the
Internet.
Granholm suggested setting up a
link between the ADL's Hate Filter,
which blocks hate sites in the same
way as a filter to porn sites, and the
Attorney General's Internet site.
She also strongly supported the
need for increasing penalties for hate
crimes, including property crimes.
"Nobody can convince me that
scratching a key on the hood of the
car of the kid who stole your girl-
friend has the same effect as carving
a swastika on the hood of another
kid's car, only because he's Jewish,"
she said. "While neither is appropri-
ate and both should be crimes, it's
only a hate crime that affects the
entire community." ri
