Slave Labor
Lawsuits Dismissed

Murder Indictment
For Israeli Arab

New York (JTA) — A lawsuit brought
on behalf of Nazi-era slave workers
against Ford Motor Co. was dismissed
Monday by a federal judge in Newark.
The judge ruled that the claims were
filed after the expiration of time limits
imposed under U.S. and German law.
The ruling came hours after another
judge in Newark threw out a similar
class-action lawsuit brought against two
German firms, electronics giant Siemens
and chemicals manufacturer Degussa.
The rulings could bolster the position
of German firms in ongoing negotia-
tions for the creation of a fund to com-
pensate former slave laborers, according
to a Holocaust law expert at the
University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Jerusalem (JTA) — An Israeli Arab was
indicted Tuesday for the August murder
of a Jewish couple hiking in a forest in
northern Israel.
Police said Abdullah Igbariya, 20,
planned to use the couple's vehicle as a
car bomb, but police arrested him before
he could do so. He was arrested days
before three other Israeli Arabs were
killed when they carried out car bomb-
ings in Haifa and Tiberias.

48,000 Swiss
Accounts Found

Zurich (JTA) — International investiga-
tors found almost 48,000 Holocaust-era
dormant accounts in Swiss banks, the
Jewish Weekly of Switzerland reported.
The total is far larger than what
had been claimed by Swiss bankers in
1995, when they said only 775 such
accounts existed.
A summary drafted by the investiga-
tors, who are headed by former U.S.
Federal Reserve Board Chairman Paul
Volcker, criticizes Swiss banks for "ques-
tionable practices" and "widespread
insensitivity" after the war.

Warsaw Jerwish
Cemetery Vandalized

Warsaw (JTA) — Vandals
broke into Warsaw's only
surviving Jewish cemetery
over Rosh HaShana,
smashing tombstones,
scrawling satanic graffiti
and strewing ashes, beer
cans and other rubbish.
Andrzej Zozula, execu-
tive director of the Union
of Polish Jewish
Communities, said Warsaw
police were investigating.
Zozula added that the dese-
cration appeared to have
been the work of a satanic
cult and it was not clear
whether anti-Semitism was
a prime motivation. "This
type of thing has happened
in Christian cemeteries,
too," he said.

Gas Field
Found Off Gaza

Jerusalem (JTA) — A large undersea nat-
ural gas field was discovered off the coast
of the Gaza Strip by a marine geologist
who was trying to locate an ancient
shipwreck.
The discovery was announced Sept. 9
by the National Geographic Society.

Population Stars
Released In Israel

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's population
totals 6,145,000, according to the
Central Bureau of Statistics.
Of this total, 4,847,000 are Jews (79
percent), 922,000 Muslims (15 percent),
with an additional 376,000 Druse,
Christians and people with no religious
affiliation (6 percent).
Israel's population increased by
147,000 during the past year — the
same 2.4 percent increase as in the prior
year. Immigration accounted for 35 per-
cent of this growth, compared to 34 per-
cent the year before.
