"It was about a girl who meets a guy in a synagogue — and I loved the fact that it had a Jewish theme," she says. Her father, Richard Lustig, says he is very proud of Marni, especially since she did it all on her own. She managed to support herself and work her way up without any help," says the Temple Israel member, a defense lawyer in Birmingham. We are all very excited about her success." Not taking anything for granted, Lustig is reading scripts, auditioning for parts and enjoying the limelight. "I think the best part of what is happen- ing to me," she says, "is that when I go on auditions, casting people already know who I am." Fl ,• 0 — Oakland Press — 7/19/99 ? Somehow, you figure smart Jane (a magazine writer) would fall for some- one a bit more clever. Preston's Jane outclasses Costner's rube-like Billy, a basically one-dimen- sional character. Her performance car- ries nuances, ranging from girlish and playful to motherly and womanly. Like the dialogue, some scenes could be pushed to go beyond stereotype. Nevertheless, the film casts its net over important issues: It's not only Billy who's responsible for the outcome of the game, but his team as well. What happens when corporate money buys up baseball? Relationships aren't easy or quick. And the game's a nail-bitter. Go see this movie if you're in the mood for Costner, baseball or a light romance. Otherwise, wait for the video. Rated PG-13. 4KO 1/2 stars. • 11 People can't get enough of Stir Crazy! Our guests come back again and again and try something new each time. He tells her he knows about cars (which he doesn't) and fixes hers (dumb luck). Jane even- tually takes up his offer to see him in a game, have dinner and more. But she has misgivings — "I'm not a groupie" — and almost misses the date. Their story becomes compelling — both of them have learned from tough lessons that have made them stronger — but both characters are given awk- ward, sometimes corny, lines that ulti- mately weaken the fabric of the film. Costner, and his performarice, are best at the ballpark. Out of the ballpark, he gets lines like these: Do you believe in God," Jane asks Billy in his Aspen home, fireplace going. "Yes," he says blandly. End of scene. When Jane shows up at Billy's Florida apartment, and a scantily clad woman appears, he explains, "But I like her, she's my masseuse." It was so much fun, and the press showed up to cover the event," she adds. For Lustig, who attended Brookside Elementary and Andover High schools, being an actress has been a lifelong dream. "I wanted to sing and be in musicals for as long as I can remember," she notes. "It was in my blood." At Andover, she performed in school plays, and during the summers she attended Stage Door Manor, a drama camp located in upstate New York. "We put on different plays and traveled around the Catskills," she recalls. "We put on cabaret shows, and I also played the lead in a production of My Fair Lady. While at Stage Door, Lustig was spotted by a talent agent and became a client. "I flew back and forth during the school year to audition," says Lustig, "and then, when I was 16 and 17, I spent the summer in. New York at Circle in the Square," a renowned Manhattan theater. She also appeared in commercials for Sony and for Always brand panty liners. "My friends all ribbed me about the Always ad whenever they saw it on TV," she laughs. After high school graduation, Lustig entered Sarah Law,rence College, but dropped out after two years to become a Ford model.
