idences for registered nurses and house
staff, a radiotherapy unit, a psychiatric
inpatient unit and modernizing,
including obstetrics/gynecology.
When the handwriting on the
wall clearly showed that survival
alone was no longer possible, a seri-
ous effort was made to affiliate with
Henry Ford Hospital. It appeared to
be a "natural," as Sinai needed more
patients and Ford lacked strength in
anesthesiology, gynecology and psy-
chiatry that Sinai offered. Unfortu-
nately, opposition grew within Sinai,
which resulted in terminating the
approach.
Soon came selling Sinai to the
Detroit Medical Center with the resul-
tant loss of autonomy and in short
order followed by the consultants' rec-
ommendation to close Sinai in favor
of New Grace Hospital.
I wish to mention that although I
had been appointed consultant to the
board in 1979, at the time of my
retirement, at no time was I consulted
about the decision making.
This is now a fait accompli, but
still sad to reflect that of all of the
DMC member hospitals, only Sinai
was included among the 50 best hos-
pitals of the United States (in the
gynecology section) and the Wall
Street Journal of May 19, 1999, said
Sinai's closing caused a loss of a "ven-
erable teaching hospital."
And so, with considerable remorse,
the Jewish community and the entire
Sinai family saw their creation abol-
ished like a ship torpedoed at sea. It
may be gone, but my heart is with it
as it reaches the bottom.

Ralph Reed
Wrong Thinking

I thought the article describing the
politics of Ralph Reed ("Rebirth Of
Ralph Reed," Aug. 27) was well writ-
ten and balanced journalism.
However, there is one issue that is
missing from the piece: If it was up to
Mr. Reed and his followers, gays and
lesbians — those evil, sinful, hedonis-
tic destroyers of society — would all
be "pushed into the sea."
So what's the deal? Is it okay if
they want to take away the civil
rights and dignity of only some of
the Jews?
