ow It's For Me! 95 representative, Matthew Dorf. "But it is saying there's a crisis in this country; the gun crisis is affecting all Americans. We believe enough is enough." The Jewish group will invite other faith communities to participate in the drive. In the meantime, Jewish groups in Washington will be actively promoting the mild, Senate-passed gun control legislation included in a juvenile jus- tice bill about to go before a House- Senate conference committee. The House version doesn't address the issue, and the gun lobby has worked hard over the recess to make sure con- ferees don't add it to the measure. Bush Attracts GOP Jews Many Jewish Republicans are con- vinced they have a winner with Texas Gov. George W. Bush, who continues to lead a swarm of under-financed rivals by a big margin. But they're also watching with concern the party's minuet with columnist- turned-candidate Pat Buchanan. Party officials worry that Buchanan could prove a spoiler by jumping to Ross Perot's Reform Party, which could drain off important votes from the religious right. But efforts to keep Buchanan inside the Republican tent won't do much for the Jewish GOPers' efforts to lure more Jews into the party. Buchanan has been linked to anti-Israel and border-line anti-Semitic statements in the past. "Any association with Buchanan is a bad thing for Jewish Republicans," said Chuck Brooks, executive director of the National PAC, a pro-Israel political action committee. Vanunu, Where Are You? Anti-nuclear activists who have taken up the cause of Mordechai Vanunu are hoping the new government in Jerusalem will release the nuclear tech- nician, who is serving an 18-year prison sentence for telling a British newspaper about Israel's nuclear arsenal. Just in case, they're extending into the U.S. Senate their campaign to get Congress to squeeze the Israelis. But there's no indication many lawmakers are interested — especially now that U.S.-Israel relations are on an even keel. So far, only Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.) and Sen. Russell Feingold (D-Wisc.), both Jewish lawmakers, have raised concerns about Vanunu. Pro-Israel lobbyists have urged law- makers to regard Vanunu's punish- ment as an internal Israeli matter, and most legislators seem content to follow their advice. per month* 1 FREE Nights and Weekends FREE Motorola Profile 300* Select Communications Your Wireless Connection 248 745-8800 169 South Telegraph Road • Pontiac Authorized Cellular Dealer *Some restrictions apply. 2 or 3 year agreement required.
