Saturday is the official day of rest
for all, and when Passover or Sukkot
come round, nobody has to plead
with his employer for time off. In the
Jewish state, Pesach and Sukkot are
national holidays.
This is not to say that Israelis
ignore the "goyish" year; it is also an
important way-station for them.
Thus the thick supplements pub-
lished by Israel's daily newspapers
on the eve of Rosh HaShana —
with summaries of major events
during the outgoing year and lists of
the most popular books, films and
songs of the previous 12 months —
are paralleled by supplements with
similar summaries and lists at the
end of December.

People in Israel expect security mea-
sures to be taken during. the High
Holidays when, as everyone knows,
terrorist groups will do their best to
spill Israeli blood.
In order to foil their plans, the
borders with Palestinian-controlled
areas are sealed, soldiers are sent out
to patrol city streets and worship-
pers who are licensed to carry small
arms probably will bring them
along when they go to pray. But
nobody pays much attention to
these phenomena because they are
used to them.
In fact, Jewish security conscious-
ness during the High Holidays is like-
ly to be greater in the United States
this year than it is in Israel, perhaps
because our co-religionists in the
States have experienced so many
attacks on Jews and Jewish institu-
tions recently.
There is another similarity between
Israeli Jews and American Jews during
the High Holidays. As a friend in the
States wrote me recently:
"Rosh HaShana is basically the
financial new year of the shuls! It is
the time when they 'blackmail' us
into paying to pray, since they know
that it is basically the only time that
most Jews go to shul. I hate this!"
The situation is similar, though
not quite the same in Israel. People
pay for seats on the High Holidays,
and in the more prestigious syna-
gogues they pay hundreds of dollars.
But there is one big difference: In
Israel, the government subsidizes reli-
gious institutions, albeit only
Orthodox ones. So for most shuls, the
sale of seats in September is just icing
on the cake. 1 I
