BANK ON SOUTHFIELD'S FUTURE!

glory of Christ, his church, and often
the more mundane reason of eco-
nomic advantage.
Jews responded to this nightmare
as best they could, marshaling their
resources and at times fighting for
their survival. On one occasion, par-
ents slaughtered their children, then
took their own lives, rather than sub-
mit to the will of the oppressors.
This trauma became part and parcel
of Ashkenazic communal identity,
being preserved in liturgical form to
this day within traditional prayer
books. The request in the Passover
Hagerada to God that He might
"Pour out thy wrath upon the gen-
tiles who know thee not," and the
memorial prayer for the martyrs
recited on most Sabbaths in tradi-
tional Ashkenazic communities, give
explicit voice to the torments of
those times.
The year 1000, then, was both a
non-date for Jews, and part of a
process in Christendom that for a time
decimated and demoralized Jewish
communities in Western Europe.
The Jewish track record with the
advent of new Christian millennia is
not a positive one. As we face the
year 2000, we recall that the last
hundred plus years have been the
worst period in the history of the
Jewish people. From the pogroms, to
the Holocaust, to the spiritual devas-
itation of Eastern European Jewry
it.inder Communism, to the demands
jby Christian society in the West that
ews conform to its ways in order to
e accepted, to the resulting contem-
orary assimilation rate and to the
traumas and personal tragedies that
were part of the founding of Israel
Jewish culture has suffered more
during this century than ever before.
The miracle is that we are here at
11! From the ashes of destruction we
ave constructed our own nation in
ur own land, where peace may be on
the threshold. We have constructed
ewish communities where many,
-nany of our fellow Jews express our
religion with increasing knowledge and
ievotion, and Jews of all ages thirst for
(udaism. We are thriving at a time
when many (though by no means all)
)f our Christian neighbors affirm our
place at the multi-cultural table.
The year 1000 was a harbinger of
nany bad things to come for
kshkenazic Jewry. We have reason to
lope that the second Christian mil-
ennium will be marked by physical
ecurity, peace of mind and a reli-
ious renaissance for all Jews. I I
