Selichot Makes Holidays Meaningful Chances are you may never heard of the prayer service that precedes the High Holidays: Selichot. Falling this year on Saturday night, Sept. 18, the Selichot prayer service is patterned after a custom practiced by Jews in the ghettos and small towns of East- ern Europe. In those days, dur- ing the 10 "Days of Awe" between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, a representative of the synagogue would go from house to house at midnight to rouse Jews from their sleep. He would knock loudly three times upon the door with his wooden clapper, then sing in a tradition- al Yiddish melody, "0 Israel! 0 holy people! Awake! Rouse your- selves! Get up for the service of the Creator!" When the Jews reached the synagogue, they would recite selichot, which are prayers asking God for forgive- ness. In modern times, this ancient custom has been adapted by many synagogues as a special worship service. Usually hosted on a Saturday night one or two weeks prior to Rosh HaShana, the Selichot ser- vice is designed to help congre- gants get in a proper mood for the coming "Days of Awe." Modern Selichot services come in a variety of formats, ranging from strict and exclusive recita- tion of prayers of forgiveness to a storytelling or musical pro- gram to watching a thought- provoking movie with Jewish themes. Selichot services, though usu- ally held in synagogue, can be adapted to home with ease. A movie, or article that leads to d honest moral introspection and self-examination is appropriate. — Jewish Family & Lff-e LAURI & ROBERT SCHUM AVERY, ERICA':& SAMANTHA MARION t:PHIL SHLOM arvprk ram mv2 Aaron tam i11t13`2 intir2 anDn 12.111 3I1 ram rriv2 to- all ow trim& and relativet. tot all friench. and relatioct. la all o-ur Nen& and relatioet. to- all ow Nen& and relatinet.
