Adult Memories
Of Holidays Past
Editor's note: These adults ac-
cepted our invitation and sub-
mitted memories of the High
Holidays.
Heidi Szlamkowicz
Farmington Hills
One of my most memorable
holiday dinners was about 18
years ago.
Having grown up in a small
family, I was not used to large
dinners for the holiday. I did no
know what to expect when my
future husband invited me to
Rosh HaShana dinner at his
aunt's house.
Of course, I was nervous. I
remember walking into her
house and there was a table set
up for 30. It had all the tradi-
tional place settings and looked
beautiful.
The women were in the
kitchen making the finishing
touches on what would be a tra-
ditional European ROsh
HaShana dinner.
Once everyone was sitting
around the table, the laughing
and conversation started. I was
not able to understand Yiddish,
but I had no problem under-
standing that this was a family
with much love and one that I
wanted to be a part of.
I am so thankful that I have
been able to enjoy many holiday
dinners since that day even
though some of our loved ones
are gone.
Rosh HaShana is truly one of
my favorite holidays and I take
much pleasure and pride in set-
ting my table for 30. I hope that
my son has the same fond mem-
ories that his father had growing
up, because I started the same
traditions when I married into
this special family.

I am 41 years old, married for
14 years and have two wonder-
ful girls (Hilary 11, and Alana,
6) and a beagle named Snoopy.
My most memorable Rosh
HaShanas were during the years
growing up when I attended
Congregation B'nai David when
they were in Southfield.
My family would drive to
services and leave the car at the
shul over Yom Toy. We would
walk home and I enjoyed those
walks because it helped me
bond with my brother, sister
and parents.
I enjoyed services with Can-
tor Hyman Adler and the choir.
It was enjoyable to listen and
sing along with them. The can-
tor put a lot of emotion into his

singing, which made me realize
how important every word was
for him. He taught me a lot
about how to appreciate and
take prayer seriously, which I
will pass on to my children.
Another memory concerns
the wonderful dinners and
lunches that my mother pre-
pared on Rosh HaShana. Her
chicken and vegetable soups
along with her roast and lukshen
kugel are things I will miss.
The spirit that existed in my
parents' home could never be
duplicated. When my family
and I walked into their home,
we knew that it was Yom Tov.
My parents have set a wonderful
example that I try to follow with
my family.
These are two of my pleasant
memories about Rosh HaShana
that I will carry with me always.
