"Ryan's really fun, he has a great sense of humor and he feels like I'm his best friend." Ryan agrees. "Cary is a great special friend," he says. "I love everything we do together, especially miniature golf. But I also like it when he gives me piggy-back rides and wrassles with me." Cary, a pharmacist who lives in Troy with his wife, JoAnne, was beginning to feel the void left by his college-age children, Jason and Laura. At the same time, the sale of his business, Concord Drugs, to a large drugstore chain, left him with more free time and a desire to fill it with something meaningful. The JFS "Special Friends" program provided the solution. Since their initial meeting, the pair continues to get together once a week and often talk on the phone in between their outings. "I've always enjoyed children," Cary says. "Both of my kids are my best friends, but I can't make them giggle anymore. Ryan's very giggly." The Levys were among the founding families of Congregation Shir Tikvah of Troy, where Cary served as chairman of the Youth Committee. He remains an active member of the synagogue's board. "Cary is a terrific guy," Sue Rosenfeld says. He's very easy-going and very consistent, which is good for Ryan." The two warmed up to each other almost immediately, although Ryan was a little shy at the beginning. They played Candyland on the floor of Ryan's room the first time they met. "I brought Ryan a disposable camera and told him we'd take pictures of all the fun things we did together," Cary says. True to his word, pages of photographs now fill a scrapbook the Rosenfelds keep as a reminder of the many good times the two have shared. continued on page 96 94 JNSourceBook
