"I'm just continuing what I did all my life. I was a social worker
for 30 years; now I'm just not paid for it," Esther says. "I found that by helping others, I'm
helping myself. It makes me feel good."
Esther was drawn to the visually impaired through professional experiences. "I worked
with geriatrics, some with vision problems. I admired their strengths."
For about seven years, Esther visited four elderly blind people every other week. She'd
handle their mail and keep them company. Two have since died, one is in a nursing home and
the other moved away.
Years ago, when her husband died months before her retirement, Esther consciously decided
to step up her volunteer involvement. "I became so involved because then I had no time to
feel sorry for myself," she says. "I've kept busy; its the only way I keep going. That's my life.
"I'm not a complainer," says Esther, who walks one hour five days a week. "We all have
aches and pains. I overlook them to do what I have to do."
No matter how bt isy her weekdays, Esther saves her weekends for her family, which includes
a son and daughter, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who cherish their Gigi
