Why do they do it? Some donate
their time because they are affected by
a disease and want to find a cure or help
with support services. Some seek the
positive recognition that inevitably

comes from volunteering. Some use
volunteering to escape the confines of
their home, avoiding loneliness by
choosing instead to seek companionship
with people in need or fellow volunteers.
Some, like Sydney, 58, give their time
as a way to fill a void once occupied

in the accounting firm of Morof,
Sheplow and Weinstein before retiring
nine years ago. "I decided when I
retired I would go crazy if I didn't keep
busy," he says. It takes my time up and

something better than a paycheck."
