children with special needs. She also
serves on the JARC board.
LINDA BACHRACK, a transplant from
the Deep South, is a freelance writer and
avid beachcomber. She writes vividly
about our youngest volunteers, Darren
King and Matt Holtzman. When her
three children were younger, Linda says
her life was volunteering. Now she's
concentrating on getting those children
through college and law school.
LINDA BENSON is a freelance writer
living in Ann Arbor. She turned the
spotlight on dedicated volunteer Diane
Lehman. Linda is married with three
grown children. Her freelance work has
appeared in Hour magazine and the
Metro Times, among others. Linda, who
teaches writing at Wayne State University,
recently completed her first novel.

GLENN TRIEST offers moving
photographs of the 10 "Honorable
M enschen" featured at the beginning
of each chapter. He read their stories
beforehand so he knew what dedicated
people he would be shooting. Still, he
was amazed by Diane Lehman of Ann
Arbor, who made him wait an hour
while she cared lovingly for her weeks-
old foster infant and dished out food
at an Ann Arbor soup kitchen. "It was
incredible to watch her," says Glenn,
who has a studio in Ferndale. "But all

CATHY GENDREN, a graphic
illustrator from Ann Arbor, created two
poignant, beautiful works to compliment
the opening essay and a story on Jewish
volunteers keeping the flame burning
bright outside metro Detroit.
